1964 Porsche 911
The 1965 model 911 actually started in 1963 with 13 prototype cars made. 13XXX serial numbers were used for these cars. Most of the cars have been destroyed, however a few remain including the first convertible.
The 1965 Porsche 911 began production in 1964. In total, 232 cars were made and referred to as 64’s because they were constructed in 1964. Interestingly, the 911 models were first called the 901 until
Peugeot reminded Porsche of a French copyright on models with a 0 in the model name. Rather then rename the new Porsche differently for France. Porsche decided to change the name “901” to “911.”
Eighty-two of the first 232 cars made in 1964 are referred to as 901 models. The numbering is not sequential as the first 911 is chassis number 49 and the last 901 is chassis number 131. Comedian
Jerry Seinfeld owns chassis 49. The easiest way to identify this car is by the license plate, it reads FIRST.
