Porsche 356

By April of 1965 the 356 models were completing a great run. The Porsche 356 or Project 356 started with a design drawing number 356.49.001 in June of 1947. The first approximately 50 cars that were built in Gmünd, Austria were originally built from aluminum.  Later production cars would be built from steel in Zuffenhausen. More than 76,000 356 cars in all variations have been made.

The Porsche 356 Pre A was available as a coupe or convertible.  The split windshield easily identifies the earlier cars. Like most new car models, there were difficulties. The Pre A 356 Porsche was produced from 1950-1955 with improvements continually being made. The 356 Roadster, 356 Continental and Pre-A 356 Speedster were some of the variations on the original design. Porsche 356 Pre-A cars can be expensive to restore and many were discarded. Likewise, the 1500cc engine that many cars came with, were expensive to rebuild so a large number of cars simply had the engines replaced with later higher displacement engines.

Porsche 356A cars were made from late 1955 to 1959. Many complements followed the PreA 356 however; Porsche engineers didn’t allow themselves to be distracted. The 356 A started as the Type 1 or “T1” by 1957 the Type 2 or “T2” was released. The 356 Speedster model proved to be popular among buyers, as did the many engine options.  The Carrera four-cam motor was an option beginning with the 356A. The 356 B had more than 15,000 copies made. Considered a more refined 356, some changes included: a larger windscreen in the rear, twin grills on the deck lid and a convenient external fuel filler door on the right front fender. Four-cam Carrera models were offered in both coupes and convertibles. Production of the Type B T-5 and T-6 were made from 1960-1963. I buy 356 cars nationwide in any condition.

Last of the Porsche 356 models were the Porsche 356C and 356SC. Mostly the same as the B model, the 356C and 356SC attracted new buyers with their standard disk brakes, which was a welcomed improvement. The final production ended in early 1966 with ten 356 Cabriolet cars; these were made for the Dutch Police Department.
